It's the last quarter of the year, and fall—one of my favorite seasons—has arrived. While I love the beauty of autumn, it also marks one of the toughest times for me as my seasonal depression begins to set in. As the days grow shorter and the weather turns colder, many of us start to feel the weight of seasonal depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It’s that time of year when motivation dwindles, routines feel heavy, and finding joy in everyday moments becomes a challenge. Yet, even in this season of emotional lows, there is hope, purpose, and a way to push through.
My struggles with seasonal depression come in waves, and each year feels different. During this time, I’ve faced a lot of loss—my child, my marriage, and someone close to me. It feels like every year, something painful happens. In therapy, my therapist told me, “You have a tendency to attach your trauma to specific dates or timeframes. That’s why you fall into this hole—because the memory of those moments triggers you.” I was shocked by how accurately she understood me, but she was right. Every year, around this time, I can remember exactly where I was and what everything felt and even smelled like.
What my therapist taught me was to honor the day for what it was, allow myself to walk through the emotions, and reflect. Whether it’s learning the lesson from the experience or finding a way to grow from it, it's about acknowledging the pain without letting it control me.
Be Obedient to Your Purpose
When life feels overwhelming, it's easy to lose sight of our purpose. We start to question our direction and motivation. But let this season be a reminder to stay obedient to the call on your life. You have a purpose that goes beyond how you feel in this moment. In fact, when we walk in our purpose, we often find strength in our tasks that helps fight off the mental and emotional burdens weighing us down.
If you're feeling disconnected or uncertain about your purpose, take a moment to reflect on what truly drives you. What did you feel passionate about before this heavy season? Reconnect with that. Whether it’s being a light for your children, building your career, or pouring into your community, remember that your work has value. Even when you don’t feel it, you’re making an impact.
Focus on What You Can Control
Sometimes I know that When you're battling seasonal depression, there’s a lot that feels out of control. The shorter days, the gloomy skies, the fatigue—it all adds up. But instead of focusing on what you can't change, lean into what you can.
- Daily Routine: Establish small, manageable routines that help you feel productive, even on days when you feel down. Consistency helps to keep you grounded.
- Self-Care: Prioritize activities that nourish your soul, whether it’s reading, taking a walk, or simply sitting quietly. At Rest Mama Inc., we promote the idea that caring for yourself isn’t selfish—it’s necessary.
- Community: Surround yourself with a supportive tribe. Sometimes, pushing through means leaning on the strength of others. Reach out to loved ones or connect with others who understand the unique struggles you're facing.
Lean on Your Support System
As mentioned, this is one of the toughest times for me. I already struggle to ask for help. As mothers and women, we often bear the emotional burdens of those around us. While it’s in our nature to care for others, it’s important to have a circle that also pours into us. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help. Whether it’s a listening ear, a friend to help with childcare, or just someone to remind you of the beauty within you, let others be there for you. You don’t have to carry this alone.
Rest Mama Inc. Is Here for You
Our mission at Rest Mama Inc. is to empower mothers and women to rest—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We understand that life has seasons, and not all of them are filled with sunshine. But even in the darker days, there is purpose. We are here to remind you that you are not defined by the season you’re in but by the impact you make as you walk in your purpose.
Through the highs and lows of life, remember that it’s okay to slow down, refocus, and rest. Let this season be a time of reflection, realignment, and restoration. And as you push through, be obedient to the tasks and purpose you’ve been given, even when it feels difficult.
You are stronger than this season. Rest, recharge, and remember that brighter days are ahead. Keep going, mama. We’re with you every step of the way.
